Technology and Science: Some of the early science in Rome included oil lamps, blown glass, and mold made pottery. They also worked on the design of ships, and came up with the triangular sail. In the late 100 AD Galen was one of the first to describe symptoms and treatments. Engineers in Rome were able to bring water to their cities by building aqueducts. One of the greatest Roman engineering system was the sewer system.

Religion: In ancient and modern Rome, religion has played a major role in the development of the Roman Empire. In the beginning, roman religion was polytheistic. Over time, Christianity replaced their many gods. Early Roman religion was animistic in nature. Roman’s believed a divine force operated in all human activities.

Politics and Government: For almost 2000 years Rome stuck with the same Government. Of course, over time some things have changed but they’ve always been a Republic. The United States actually based our government system off of Rome’s. Taxes and war decisions were made by the two male consuls when the Roman Republic was first created. They had a system with the senate and consuls but the Emperors had the real power.

Military: “The Roman military was the most successful and powerful in history, dominating the Western world for over a thousand years.” No other military could compare to this one even for another millennium. The Roman military, made up of citizen soldier farmers was undefeated; eventually this formed into a full time competent army. They grew too big and were taken over by barbarian invasions and self destruction.

Geography: Rome is characterized by the seven hills and the tiber river. It is called the city of seven hills. Rome lies west of the Apennine Mountains which forms a backbone for Italy. The climate is a Mediterranean climate. The summers are warm to mild, and the winters are cold.

Economy: The Roman economy never developed into anything terribly complex compared to modern economies. Ancient Rome was a slave based economy whose main concern was feeding the vast number of citizens. Agriculture and trade dominated the economic fortunes, only supplemented by small scale industrial production.

How they spend their time: Most Romans would spend their time fishing on the riverbanks. They would also spend time wrestling, working out, running, and jumping to stay fit. Ancient Romans enjoyed dancing and entertaining guests. Gambling was also a popular activity along with playing with dolls and model soldiers.
Art and Architecture: Rome's architecture over the centuries has greatly developed, especially from the Classical and Imperial Roman styles to modern Fascist architecture. Rome was once the world's main epicentres of classical architecture, developing new forms such as the arch, the dome and the vault.
